“Oh Sister, there is a God.” What else could one say upon entering the world famous Erotic Heritage Museum (EHM) for the first time? Amazingly well curated and containing a vast collection, both historic and current, representing all things erotic and sexual, the EHM was the perfect new BFF.
More importantly, it was a supportive platform of inclusivity with a freedom of speech and artistic expression in a public space, the likes of which I had never experienced before.
As a founding member of the Sin Sity Sisters, an order of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgnece, my introduction by our abbess to Dr. Laura Henkel and the EHM was an effective and symbiotic co-mingling of forces. The Sisters desire to bring community awareness to their Sisters AIDS Drug Assistance Program (SADAP) and safer-sex outreach and to promulgate omniversal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt. The EHM laboring to provide a safe and inspiring space with a multitude of opportunites for connecting the diverse and fringe communities in Las Vegas and nearby states. Many of whom, I believe, I had the opportunity to interact and connect with only because of EHM and Dr Laura’s mission to educate and integrate with the world, re-enforcing that sexuality is one of our most common denominators as humans.
As an AIDS activist, having an enviornment were people felt respected, empowered and welcomed opened the flood gates of trust for communication with strangers I met at events at EHM. That in turn positively affected peoples access to community programs and HIV medications they didn’t know they could utilize.
